Sinus lift surgery to make room for upper implants

When you lose upper back teeth, the sinus above them tends to expand downward and the bone thins. A sinus lift adds bone in that space so an implant has something solid to anchor into.

What it involves

A routine step, not a setback

The specialist accesses the space between the jaw and the sinus membrane, gently lifts the membrane, and places grafting material. Over several months it matures into bone that can hold an implant. In many cases the implant is placed at the same time; in others it follows after healing.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

Is a sinus lift painful?
It is done under local anesthesia with sedation available. Most patients compare the recovery to a routine extraction and manage with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long before I can get the implant?
If the implant is not placed at the same time, the graft usually needs about four to nine months to mature, depending on how much bone was needed.
